GRS Psychology provides comprehensive assessments to help individuals better understand their cognitive profile and learning style, and explore concerns related to ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), learning differences, and emotional functioning. Through a collaborative and strengths-based approach, the process offers clear, actionable recommendations to guide educational planning and access appropriate supports, as well as offer diagnoses and better understand complex presentations. The assessment process can empower families and to foster children and adolescents' success.
Our comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessment process is designed to deliver a clear and individualized understanding of each client's cognitive, academic, and emotional profile. Assessments at GRS Psychology are evidence-based and address a range of concerns, including learning difficulties, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and other developmental or behavioral challenges. We also offer specialized evaluations for university and college students to support academic transitions and accommodations.
Our psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, and university or college students deliver an in-depth understanding of cognitive abilities, learning strengths, and areas for growth. Through comprehensive psychological and educational evaluations, we can identify challenges related to learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental concerns, including ADHD and ASD, as well as issues related to social, emotional and behavioural challenges (e.g., mood regulation, anxiety disorders). Assessments provide clear, actionable recommendations for individualized education plans (IEPs), academic accommodations, and effective intervention strategies. We supportindividuals and their families in Waterloo and surrounding regions by providing diagnoses when appropriate, facilitating access to necessary educational resources, and promoting academic success and emotional well-being throughout each stage of learning and development.
The psychological assessment process for high school students preparing to transition to post-secondary education, or those students already in the university/college setting, focuses on identifying cognitive, academic, emotional, and functional strengths and challenges that may impact their learning and adjustment. The goal is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the student’s profile to inform recommendations for accommodations and support services in the university setting. We also conduct re-assessments to update previous, outdated psychoeducational assessments, in order to receive appropriate student services in the post-secondary setting.
At GRS Psychology, our gold standard autism spectrum disorder assessment process combines the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) (performed in collaboration with colleagues from Univerity of Guelph), with comprehensive standardized developmental interviews. The ADOS-2 is a highly regarded, evidence-based tool that allows us to observe and evaluate social communication, play, and repetitive behaviors across a range of ages and developmental levels. Alongside the ADOS-2, we conduct detailed parent and caregiver interviews using standardized measures to gather a thorough developmental history and assess current functioning. This dual approach, in addition to more comprehensive cognitive testing, provides greater diagnostic clarity, and supports the formulation of individualized intervention recommendations for clients and their families.
Our ADHD evaluations provide a thorough analysis of attention and behavioral challenges in children and adolescents. Utilizing comprehensive diagnostic services, we identify ADHD symptoms and offer effective intervention strategies to support families in Waterloo and beyond. Our expert psychological assessments for children and pre-teens ensure accurate diagnosis, helping parents and educators implement appropriate accommodations and interventions.

The process begins with a referral from parents, educators, or healthcare providers, followed by an initial interview with the client and their caregivers. This stage gathers background information, including developmental history, academic performance, mental health concerns, and any prior diagnoses or supports.
Based on the referral concerns, a tailored assessment battery is selected. This may include:
Assessment typically occurs over three to five sessions, depending on the complexity of the concerns and logistical issues. Standardized measures are used alongside observational data and questionnaires completed by the client, parents, and educators.
Data is interpreted within the context of the client’s developmental background, home and family environment, and academic experience. If applicable, a diagnosis is provided (e.g., ADHD, learning disorder, anxiety disorder), consistent with DSM-5-TR criteria.
Based on the findings, the psychologist outlines specific, evidence-based recommendations. These may include:
A feedback session is held with the client and/or family to review results and ensure understanding of the clinical formulation. A comprehensive report is provided, which can be provided to support providers, including school boards to help develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), or submitted to a post-secondary's accessibility or disability services office to support requests for accommodations.
